Of course we got a late start on the road, 11:00. And then we hit construction traffic on the only road that goes down to the beach. Jamison was quite perturbed by the inefficiencies of the road crew. First of all, why at they doing this on a Saturday? Secondly, they only had a one way section opened so both directions had to take turns using it. There were only a few vehicles coming from the other direction and about a mile long line of cars waiting to go our direction. Jamison really wanted to discuss this point with the person with the stop sign, but it would take too long to explain and once we had a chance to get moving again we were not going to stop. Someday this will be a beautiful four lane freeway down towards the beach, I wonder if it will be done while we are still here.
We did eventually make it to Sao Sebastiao where we take the ferry. We waited for about twenty minutes before we drove on the boat. It wasn't the charming ferries I have taken in the Seattle area, it was just a big metal barge really, but Jamison took whoever wanted to and went and stood at the front so they could at least see the water.
We found a waterfall. It was impressive and we drove right up to it. And it had nice bathrooms too. Grace said, "This is a nice bathroom because the doors actually close!" we sure have come a long way since we first arrived in bathroom standards. Funny thing is, this really nice bathroom with all it's closing doors didn't have any toilet paper! Still, the doors were great.
It was getting pretty late, 3:00pm, so we headed to the beach. We found one with a playground, and pretty good sand. It isn't as fluffy as Our Beach sand, and was a bit rocky where the waves break, but let's try not to be beach snobs. It is a beach! (oh and the water was chilly, us three oldest family members opted out of swimming)
We paid R$11 in candy so we could use the bathrooms at the gas station. That's like $5.
Then we had dinner at a crepe place on the beach. We had the most amazing sunset.
And we discovered a stranded sea turtle. We were all very worried about this turtle, the friends we made put it in the water this morning, but it ended back on the beach. It didn't look like it was injured so I wonder if it was sick or something.
The kids kept running back and checking on it during dinner. We have really become attached to sea turtles while we have been here.
On our way home we got on the ferry at 7:30 and with one quick bathroom break (a free one this time) we got home at around 10.
