But wait, not so fast. The bike box straps are making a horrible rattling noise, so we pull over to fix it. 10 minutes later we are on our way, again. Then we are headed to a new beach. But now the straps are vibrating at a pretty annoying frequency. The tone actually changes when our speed changes so it is mildly entertaining, and we try to just accept it.
We had to explain the neutrality of the Shuffle setting in the iPod. When we got through an hour of our music, we changed to audio eBooks. We made it through traffic to our usual beach spot, but today we went on.
We went on a pretty rough dirt road with lots of pot holes (or are potholes only with ashphault?) I was pretty skeptical that we would even find this hotel. But it turned out amazing. Just the front gate was amazing.
It used to be the house of a rich guy. He wanted to make it into a casino, but didn't quite make it that far. It was empty for five years, then the guy's son made it into a hotel.
The grounds are incredible. And because we are a nice family the owner's wife, Emelia upgraded us to the suite. We really enjoyed the hammocks on the screened patio. We saw some amazing blue butterflies that were huge! And the reddest birds I have ever seen. All as I lounged in a hammock! That is where we made up the phrase, "Chillin' like a Brazilian!"
After lunch, that came with the best peach juice I have ever tasted, we headed down to the beach. The owner told us of a great beach that turned out to be perfect. It wasn't commercial. The sand was shallow a long way out. And it wasn't crowded. Of course it was cloudy, isn't it always for us. And it did start raining, but that has never stopped us before.
I really enjoyed watching the kids try to body surf. Abby was giggling with gusto as she rode the waves. Oliver had a great time trying. Felix was hilarious standing on the board waiting for a wave to come to him, but not too close. Miles loved it and smiled big the whole time. Grace and I tried so hard, but it does come down to timing. Jamison really got a hang of it. It was just awesome.
The rain didn't let up but we had a little drive to dinner. We skipped on the fish place recommended. We tried to find a pasta place, but we got sidetracked and went to the best Mexican in Brazil. I am so glad we did. It tasted SO good, almost like home (the sour cream wasn't the same, but everything else was great). The atmosphere was awesome. Lots of skateboards and snowboards and waiters that spoke awesome English. The staff even made paper airplanes for my boys. Can you believe it! A restaurant that gives out paper airplanes! Only in Brazil. They even let us try out the sombrero.

As we drove home and some all the crowded restaurants, we wondered, how can you be there when you could be at Taco Surf!
(More to come, stay tuned!)
